George Schwizgebel's Film Opens Animanima 2023

12/8/2023

The new film by the Swiss animation master Georges Schwizgebel From one picture... to another will be the first film that the festival audience will see in this year's Animanima's main competition program.

The pasty stroke and muted color palette make Schwizgebel's painterly handwriting always recognizable. Scenes are in permanent, living, kaleidoscopic transformation. The visual narrative of the film begins with Édouard Manet's Olympia (1863), and, after a successive change of various motifs – unexpected, strange transfigurations – ends with the canvas White and Black (1913) by Félix Vallotton, and thus the connection between motif-like works (reclining female act) that separate exactly half a century.

The musical score achieves an extremely suggestive atmosphere in all of Schwizgebel's films, including the most recnet one, where he opted for the music of the Argentinian composer and guitarist Atahualpa Yupanqui.

On the program: Tuesday, September 19 at 8:15 p.m.
