Venue: Grand Hall
Time: 8:00 pm
Original title: Die Abenteuer des Prinzen Achmed
Direction and animation: Lotte Reininger
Germany, 1926, 65’

Adventures of Prince Achmed is the first European full-feature animated film, a supreme piece of art of the German director Charlotte ’Lotte’ Reiniger (1899-1981). Based on the motifs from ‘1001 Nights’, this is a story of the journeys and escapades of Prince Achmed. The film was made using the silhouette technique, the so-called Chinese Shadows. The silhouettes have no face and their characters emerge from their fluid and suggestive movements, contributing to the overall impression of a fantastic and phantasmagoric tale.

This silent film was helped by some of the important avant-garde artists of the time, such as Walter Ruttmann, Berthold Bartosch and Karl Koch, with the original symphony music composed by Wolfgang Zeller, and famed in France after the famous cinema artists Jean Renoir and Rene Claire recognized it as an authentic work of art. It screening at Animanima will be accompanied by the sound performance of the German multimedia artist Thomas Köner.

Thomas Köner
Thomas Köner (b. 1965 in Bochum, Germany) studied at Musikhochschule Dortmund and CEM Studio Arnhem. He is a distinctive figure in the fields of contemporary music, techno and multimedia art, working across the spheres of composition, visual arts, installation work and music production. His familiarity with both the visual and sonic arts resulted in numerous commissions to create music for silent films for the Auditorium du Musée du Louvre, Musée d’Orsay, Centre Pompidou, and others. His performances and installations are audiovisual meditations that explore our notion of time, memory and location. He invites audiences to enjoy impressions of depth, distance and disappearance, and to fathom the qualities of the space around our limits of perception.

The programme is presented with the support of the Goethe Institute in Belgrade..
