Church of the Holy Resurrection

The modern history of Čačak begins with the founders of Medieval Serbia, the Nemanjić dynasty. Manuscripts from 12th century make a mention of Gradac, a fortified settlement that used to stand in the place where the modern Čačak lies today. Gradac was the seat of Stefan Nemanja’s brother, Stefan Stracimir, the legendary founder of the city and the builder of the Mother of God’s Monastery. The monastery enjoyed the protection of the royal family and was granted a special status, together with Studenica, Đurđevi stupovi and Hilandar. Having survived the tumults of the Turkish invasions, the monastery’s great tradition is bestowed on the city’s Church of the Holy Resurrection that stands in the place of the original monastery.

House of Jovan Obrenović Coat of arms of the Obrenović dynasty

Many of the heritage-listed buildings in Čačak today date from the 19th and early 20th century. Among the most beautiful ones are the house of Jovan Obrenović, built in 1835, in the Oriental-Balkan style. The house’s façade features the only original coat of arms of the Obrenović dynasty that has survived until today.

Belgrade Hotel

One of the largest buildings erected in Serbia in 19th century is the building of the former District Council, built by a major captain of industry of his time, Ferdinand Kren. Another jewel connected to the name of this pioneer businessman is the Belgrade Hotel, originally named the Kren Hotel. However, the flattering title of the city beauty belongs to the Dragomirović Palace, erected in 1924. The rich collections of the Nadežda Petrović art gallery and the National Museum regularly attract large numbers of visitors and tourists.
